Jokes apart, the saying means that beauty without a certain special flavour is plain and tasteless, or just skin-deep. It doesn't mean that you should instantly fall into depression because you're just beautiful, without any extra special bonuses. She is either a sweet charming girl with a perfect smile or a wickedly charming mysterious woman. Both 'variants' are very interesting for they stimulate males' curiosity and please their eyes if not brains (the latter 'pleaser' is highly optional in this case).
Secondly, we deal with female wisdom as a fine bonus to beauty. What does wisdom contribute to simple superficial ugly beauty? It makes a woman much more interesting and appealing when she's wise. A wise woman always knows what to say and how to say it, she knows what she wants and she knows when to show her weaknesses or strengths. As a rule, she's very intelligent and polite. She is able to make constructive decisions which eventually result into the most constructive outcome for her and for people who surround her.
Then, intelligence is a fine bonus to female beauty. However, each and every lady should treat her intelligence very carefully and take into account certain all-time stable tendencies. Most men are afraid of intelligent women, that's why a beautiful and intelligent lady will show her intelligence in shotgun situations to put it roughly. It means that if a woman is not only beautiful but also wise, she will try to show her intelligence to her male surrounding in a dosing manner.
Another part of global female grace accompanied by beauty is mystery. A beautiful woman without a certain mysterious aura around her is superficial as plain food. It is hardly ever memorable without a certain spice-up trick. That's why if a woman wants to preserve mystery within her personality she shouldn't be excessively down to earth and simple. Being mysterious means balancing on the verge of open and secretive, she's that golden middle which neither puzzles nor bores us too much.
All these reflections contribute to the fact that the saying about beauty being trivial if it's not 'decorated' with certain spiritual virtues deserves the right to be true and justified.
